If you're excited to finally take your boat out on the water this spring, use these simple tips to ensure your boat is properly prepared. As always, be sure to use a quality synthetic marine oil as part of your preparations.

How to Take Your Boat out of Winter Storage

If your boat has been in hibernation all winter long, you're probably very excited about the change in the seasons. Spring means your boat can finally come back to life and get back in the water. However, avoid rushing your boat back and take some time to get it ready for a new season of fun.

Get Your Boat Clean

To get started on your maintenance checklist, tackle your cleaning tasks first. Pull off your boat's cover and start by removing any dust or moisture that managed to get in over the winter months. Wash your boat with mild soap and gently scrub away any potentially corrosive substances that can cause damage. Don't forget to add a layer of wax for added protection from the outdoor elements. Clean all of the windows, polish metal parts, and clean canvas or fabric components. Check out AMSOIL's Heavy-Duty Metal Protector which will protect your boat's metal parts against the effects of salt and moisture!

Perform a General Inspection

Once your boat is clean, performing an inspection will be much easier and more effective. A clean boat will make it easier to spot cracks and other issues that can hide behind dust and other debris. Check all of the nuts, bolts, and screws to be sure they're perfectly tightened and in their correct place. Inspect the dock for chafing, cracks, blistering, or other issues that need to be repaired. Take care of as much of the inspection as you can but be sure to also have more technical aspects, like the structure, inspected by a professional. This can help you avoid issues that may cut your boating season short.

Do You Need to Restock?

Your boat won't be ready for the water if it isn't properly stocked with the right supplies. Check your inventory of safety equipment, first aid supplies, spare parts, and tools to be sure you're ready for anything while out on the water. Don't just check to see what you have, make sure items are still in good working condition and that they're not expired. Check Your Fluids

Your boat will likely need some of its fluids changed before heading out for a day on the water. One of the most important fluids you should check on is your boat's motor oil. Even if you changed your oil before storing your boat for the winter, it's a good idea to check on it now. If it's not looking great, check out AMSOIL's range of synthetic marine motor oils and find the one that's right for your watercraft. You should also check the condition and level of your power steering fluid, coolant, and fuel before deciding your boat is ready to go.

How's Your Fuel?

Your boat won't get far without fuel. Avoid getting stranded by checking up on your fuel before rushing out onto the water. If your fuel started to break apart during the winter, drain it before it has a chance to cause internal damage and replace it with fresh fuel. While you're at it, replace your fuel filters for better performance. Don't forget to also inspect the fuel hoses for damage. Often damaged hoses will feel soft and brittle and will display bulges or cracks. These conditions can lead to leaks, which will be bad news for your boat.

Test It Out

Take your time preparing your boat for the spring in order to ensure that you'll have the best boating season. Test out every component of your boat and avoid assuming things are good without first inspecting them. Remember, you have plenty of time to prepare your boat and still enjoy many outings before winter makes its way back. Once you're sure everything is working smoothly, make your way to the water safely. If you're a fisherman, check out this useful information from AMSOIL.
