During the winter, the cold and the weather can cause things to not function as they should. When it comes to your car, you may be left in a sticky situation. Use these tricks to make it past winter.

Car Care Tips and Tricks for the Winter

The winter cold is no joke. With it come plenty of inconveniences that can turn a simple trip to the store into an event. From the slippery pavement to the puddles left behind by the winter storms, getting around can be a pain. When it comes to your car, this can be even worse. To help you have an easier time with your car this winter, check out these tips and tricks.

Fog-Free Windshields

During the winter, it can be hard to keep your windshield and windows from fogging up. Although it can seem hard, it's not impossible. Before they fog up, take the proper steps to reduce the chances of this happening. One super easy way to prevent windshield fogging just takes a bit of shaving cream. Grab some shaving cream from your bathroom and spread it on the inside of your windshield. Cover the entire thing and then wipe it off carefully. Since shaving cream contains some of the same ingredients as defoggers, this will ensure your windshields will stay clear. If you notice that the air in your car tends to be humid, this can lead to fogging. To reduce the humidity, remove any water containers you may have in your car since these can contribute to the humidity. You can also put kitty litter in a sock and place it in your car. Kitty litter is very absorbent and can significantly reduce the levels of humidity in your car.

Make Your Own Ice Scraper

It's not uncommon for ice to develop on your windshield overnight. With temperatures dropping at night and the extra moisture in the air, this is bound to happen. If you're prepared with an ice scraper as you walk out to your car in the morning, this may not seem like a huge deal. However, if you don't have an ice scraper, you may be left scrambling for a solution. Never pour hot water on your windshield in hopes that it will thaw the ice since this may crack your windshield. Instead, dig out an old credit card or gift card and use this sturdy piece of plastic and some elbow grease to remove the ice. If you're at home, you can also dig up a plastic spatula from your kitchen to get the job done without scratching the glass.

Overcome Frozen Conditions

Many people may not know this, but the keyhole in your car can actually freeze. If you have to stick your key in there to get your car unlocked, then your key may get stuck in the keyhole. This can be super frustrating, especially if you have somewhere to be. Luckily, preventing this is very easy. You can start by using a straw to blow air into the keyhole. The hot air you're blowing in there can help thaw it out. Another option is to put some hand sanitizer on your key before putting it in the keyhole. The alcohol in the hand sanitizer will help melt the frozen parts of the keyhole, making opening your car much easier.

Keep Your Side Mirrors from Freezing

Parking your car in the street or in your driveway overnight will often result in frozen and frosty side mirrors that make it impossible to check the lanes around you. Preventing this from happening is easy enough and just requires a couple of plastic bags. Fish out some plastic grocery store bags or ziplock bags and place them around your mirrors. Tie them shut and leave them on your car overnight. In the morning, remove the bags and you'll see clear mirrors with no signs of frost.
